Museo Regional de Atacama

The Museo Regional de Atacama covers the natural and human history of the Atacama region, from pre-Columbian cultures through the Spanish colonial period to the silver and copper booms that shaped modern Copiapó. The archaeological section is the strongest, with well-preserved textiles, ceramics, and mummies from the Atacameño cultures that adapted so successfully to one of the harshest environments on earth.

The building itself — a 19th-century colonial house around a courtyard — is worth seeing for its architecture. The museum is in the northern part of the city centre, an easy walk from the main plaza.

A story
The museum is housed in the former home of the Matta family — one of the powerful mining dynasties whose silver wealth transformed Copiapó in the 19th century. Manuel Antonio Matta, born here, became one of Chile's most prominent liberal politicians and journalists. The house itself, with its handsome proportions and colonial courtyard, is as interesting as the exhibits inside.
