A handsome stone church in the historic quarter, two blocks west of the Plaza de Armas, built between 1755 and 1775 by the Dominicans. The original adobe convent was destroyed when Dutch pirate Joris van Spilbergen sacked the city in 1615; the rebuilt stone structure has survived everything since.
Three naves, vaulted side chapels, and an exterior pulpit on the corner that was used for preaching to slaves who were not permitted inside. The bell tower, separate from the main church, is one of the oldest in northern Chile.
