Antillanca Ski Resort

Antillanca is a ski resort set within Puyehue National Park at 1,070 metres elevation, a 98 km drive from Osorno. It is smaller than the major resorts at Portillo or Valle Nevado, but the volcanic setting inside the Cordón Caulle caldera is unlike anything else in Chile. The runs vary from beginner to advanced; the snowfall can be heavy and wet given the proximity to the Pacific, but the scenery — forest, volcanic rock, steam vents — is consistently dramatic.

The resort operates from June to September and is reachable in about two hours from Osorno on a road that passes through Puyehue National Park. Accommodation is available on the mountain in a small lodge; day trips from Osorno are practical. In summer, the access road and the surrounding national park trails are accessible for trekking.

A story
Antillanca sits inside an active volcanic caldera — the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle complex. Skiers on the upper runs are aware of this: the crater rim is visible from the lifts, and steam occasionally rises from vents in the surrounding terrain. When the complex erupted in 2011, it buried the lower slopes under meters of ash and forced a two-season closure. The resort reopened with the pumice still visible on the edges of cleared runs.
