Fort Santa Barbara

Above San Juan Bautista stand the ruins of Fuerte Santa Barbara, a Spanish fortress first built in 1749 to deter the pirates and privateers who had been using the island as a base. The walls of the fort have been partially restored and a few iron cannons still point out across Cumberland Bay.

It is a short, steep walk from the village square and the views down onto the red roofs of San Juan Bautista and out across the deep blue water are some of the best on the island. Sunset is the obvious moment to come up.
