Ecomapu have been working Valparaíso for more than twenty years and organise the city by theme rather than by neighbourhood: the funiculars, the street art, the La Matriz quarter, a cooking tour, a tipsy tour, and a heritage walk that starts before the Spanish. They also run a free tour.
The pitch is community tourism — routes built with the people who live on the hills, with the fee meant to stay in the barrio. That is a claim a lot of operators make; what is checkable is that they belong to AVALPO and CHILESERTUR and print their SERNATUR registration number, 3099, on the page, which not many do.
