La Gaitana Monument

The La Gaitana Monument stands on the Malecón along the Magdalena River as one of the most striking pieces of public sculpture in the Colombian interior. The figure depicts a Timana indigenous woman in the act of killing the Spanish conquistador who had executed her son — a scene of raw, historical violence rendered in bronze.

The monument commemorates a real episode from the Spanish conquest of the Huila region in the 1530s. La Gaitana, the historical figure, is celebrated throughout the department as a symbol of resistance. The riverside location gives the monument a strong visual setting, and the Malecón itself is a pleasant walk along the Magdalena.

A story
La Gaitana was a Timana indigenous leader whose son was publicly executed by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Añasco in the 1530s. According to the account, she led a revenge attack that captured and killed Añasco, gouging out his eyes and cutting out his heart. The monument, one of the most dramatic public sculptures in Colombia, depicts this act of vengeance. It became a symbol of indigenous resistance across Colombia.
