Rivera Thermal Springs

Rivera, a small municipality about 30 kilometres from Neiva along the Neiva-Bogotá highway, is known for its natural thermal springs. The waters emerge warm and mineral-rich, fed by the volcanic geology of the central cordillera. Several bathing complexes have been built around the springs, ranging from simple municipal pools to more developed spa facilities.

It's an easy half-day trip from Neiva. The surrounding landscape — rolling hills and the Rio Neiva valley — is attractive, and the drive itself is pleasant. Most visitors combine a morning in the pools with lunch in Rivera before returning to the city.

A story
The thermal springs at Rivera are fed by volcanic activity deep in the Huila cordillera, and the water carries a distinct sulphurous edge. The town has built a modest spa industry around the springs, but they remain genuinely natural rather than resort-sanitised. Local families from Neiva treat Rivera as a weekend escape, and on Saturday afternoons the pools are crowded with people who've made the trip specifically for the water.
