Church of San Francisco

Popayan's grandest colonial church, with an elaborate baroque facade.

The largest and most ornate of Popayan's colonial churches, built in the 18th century and restored after the 1983 earthquake that flattened much of the city. The baroque facade is particularly detailed, with layered stonework in the white limestone that gives Popayan the nickname "the White City." The adjacent former Franciscan monastery now operates as the Hotel Monasterio — worth walking through the courtyard even if you are not a guest.
