Popayan's appeal is in the walking. The colonial centre is compact and almost entirely white, so the pleasure is in wandering from church to bridge to plaza, letting the architecture accumulate. Most of the churches and museums are clustered within a few blocks, and the hilltop viewpoints at Belen and Morro de Tulcan bookend any visit nicely.
