Iglesia de San Agustín

Augustinian church with a particularly fine baroque main altar

A late-17th-century Augustinian church just south of the cathedral. Less famous than San Francisco or Santo Domingo but, for many locals, the most beautiful interior in town: a soaring baroque main altarpiece in gilded wood, with painted panels and carved saints set against a white nave.

Look out for the painted Virgen del Rosario above a side altar — one of the more emotionally affecting colonial paintings in the city. Closes at midday between morning and evening services.
