The farms around Salento offer some of the most accessible and genuine coffee experiences in Colombia. Several fincas (farms) within walking distance or a short ride from town open their doors to visitors for tours that cover the full coffee cycle: the cultivation of the coffee plant under shade trees, the picking of the red cherries, the washing and drying of the beans, the roasting, and the cupping.
The tours are typically run by family members on working farms, not purpose-built tourist operations, which makes the experience more authentic. You will usually get to pick coffee (in season) and taste the result. Several farms have been in the same family for generations and the guides speak with genuine knowledge. The UNESCO designation has made the region more aware of its heritage, and several farms have invested in improving their explanatory materials without losing the intimacy of the experience.
