Alto de los Ídolos

Alto de los Ídolos, about 4 kilometres from the village of Isnos (itself a short distance north of San Agustín), contains the tallest statue in the entire San Agustín archaeological zone — a single figure standing 7 metres high, carved from a single stone. The scale is startling in person; photographs don't prepare you for it.

The site is more compact than the main Parque Arqueológico but has its own distinct character. The journey there — across the Magdalena gorge by boat or bridge, then up into the hills — is part of the experience. Alto de las Piedras, a few kilometres further into the Isnos area, contains the "Doble Yo" (Double I) statue, notable for its unusual double-faced carving. Most visitors combine both Isnos sites in a single excursion from San Agustín, which makes for a full day.

A story
The 7-metre statue at Alto de los Ídolos — the tallest found anywhere in the San Agustín region — was originally painted in bright yellows, reds, blacks, and whites, as were most of the statues. Almost nothing of the original colour survives on any of them, worn away by centuries of rain in the Andean highlands. The vivid painted figures that once stood here, and what ceremonies they presided over, are entirely lost.
