Súa

Súa is a small, pretty fishing village about 8 km south of Atacames, tucked into a sheltered bay with a rock headland on one side. The beach here is smaller and calmer than the main Atacames strip — less commercial, quieter, and with a view across to a small offshore island where frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies roost.

The village has a couple of simple restaurants serving fresh fish (whatever came in that morning), and you can hire a fisherman's boat for a short tour of the bay and the bird rocks. Pelicans cruise the shoreline in squadrons throughout the day. This is a good half-day trip from Atacames for anyone wanting to escape the noise.

A story
The bay at Súa sits inside a natural headland that calms the swell, making it one of the safest swimming spots on the northern Ecuadorian coast. Local fishermen have worked the bay for generations, and in the early morning you can watch them return with the night's catch and haggle with buyers directly on the beach.
