Atacames does not offer archaeological sites or cultural museums — it offers the beach, and it does that well. The main draw is the long, wide strip of dark volcanic sand that runs for several kilometres, backed by a strip of thatched bars and seafood restaurants. Beyond the beach, there is some low-key wildlife watching and the chance to explore quieter spots along the same coast.
