Nambillo Waterfalls

The Nambillo waterfalls are reached by a combination of tarabita (cable car) across the Rio Nambillo gorge and a forest trail on the far side. Seven waterfalls are strung along the trail — named Reina, Madre, Colibri, Guarumos, Ondinas, Maderos, and Nambillo — ranging from curtain falls to narrow drops into deep pools. The trail takes two to four hours return depending on how far you go and how long you spend swimming.

The tarabita operates from a point about 7 km from the village centre. Admission covers the cable car and access to the trail. The falls are at their most impressive after rain, when the volume increases dramatically; in the dry season they are smaller but the pools are still swimmable and the forest humidity is reduced. This is one of the more accessible waterfall experiences in Ecuador — no serious climbing, a clearly marked trail, and the cable car crossing adds a bit of spectacle that purely walk-in trails lack.

A story
The tarabita that crosses the Nambillo River valley to reach the waterfalls runs on a steel cable suspended 152 metres above the gorge — one of the steeper cable car crossings in Ecuador, powered by a Nissan pickup motor bolted to a frame on the far bank. The basket swings gently in the gap between two walls of cloud forest, which tends to concentrate the mind.
