Otavalo's Saturday market is the reason most people come, and it is genuinely the largest indigenous market in South America rather than a performance of one. It runs all week at reduced size.
What is less obvious from the market square is that the villages around it — Peguche, Cotacachi, Ilumán — are where the weaving, the leather and the instrument-making actually happen, and several of them receive visitors directly.
