When to Go

Otavalo sits at 2,530 metres, which gives it a mild, spring-like climate year-round with temperatures hovering between 7°C and 22°C. There is no bad time to visit, but two seasons shape the experience.

The dry season runs from June to September. Days are clear and sunny, the views of Imbabura and the surrounding volcanoes are at their best, and hiking conditions around Laguna Cuicocha and the crater lakes are ideal. June also brings the Inti Raymi festival — the Andean solstice celebration — with music, dancing, and purification ceremonies at the Peguche waterfall. This is one of the most atmospheric times to visit.

The wet season from October to May brings afternoon showers that rarely last long but can cloud the mountain views. The countryside turns intensely green after the rains, and tourist numbers are lower. The Saturday market runs year-round regardless of weather.

If your sole reason for coming is the market, Saturday is the day to arrive regardless of season. Stay Friday night to catch the setup at dawn on Saturday.
