Saint-Laurent is the best place in French Guiana to get on a river. The Maroni is the border, the road and the reason the town is here, and half a dozen piroguiers work out of the landing — a half day up to Saint-Jean and the islands, or expeditions of a week and more to the villages of the upper river and into the Tapanahoni on the Surinamese side.
The other operators here go into the forest rather than up it: walks, night walks for the frogs and snakes, and flights over the estuary. The town's own guided tour of the Camp de la Transportation is booked at the tourist office on the esplanade, not through an agency.
