Annai

Where the Pakaraima foothills meet the savannah, and the gateway village to the North Rupununi

Annai is a Makushi village at the northern edge of the Rupununi savannah, at the point where the grassland runs up against the forested foothills of the Pakaraima mountains. That junction is the reason to stay: within a short distance you can be in savannah, gallery forest along the creeks, and rainforest proper, which makes for an unusually broad bird list in a small area.

The village is the administrative centre for the North Rupununi communities and the practical base for visiting them — Surama to the north, Rewa and Yupukari further out across the savannah. It sits on the Georgetown–Lethem road, so it is reachable by the long overland bus as well as by air to the airstrip.

Rock View Lodge has been here since 1992 and is the usual place to stay, sitting between Annai and the neighbouring village of Rupertee.

Activities

Annai is a base rather than an attraction: a place to sleep, and a starting point for the North Rupununi villages, the Pakaraima foothills and the Iwokrama canopy walkway an hour north.

Connections are by the Georgetown–Lethem road or the airstrip, and both are slow. Allow more time than the map suggests.
