Calle Estigarribia (Ceramics Street)

The cobbled Calle Estigarribia runs from the lakefront up to the church and is lined with the workshops and yards of Areguá's ceramicists. The town is the centre of Paraguay's small ceramics industry, and the styles range from traditional brown-glazed pots and farmyard animals to ambitious contemporary sculpture.

Most studios are open daily. Prices for a small piece are very reasonable; serious work runs into the hundreds of dollars. Wander into a yard if the gate is open — the makers are usually happy to talk.
