The Costanera is Asuncion's riverfront promenade, running along the Paraguay River at the base of the historic centre. It has been cleaned up and developed over the years and is now a pleasant place to walk in the early morning or evening, with views across the wide, brown river to the Chaco on the far bank. The promenade has benches, open-air food stalls, and occasional music in the evenings.
The waterfront also gives you the best perspective on the Palacio de los López from below, and the escarpment behind it shows clearly how the historic city was built on a bluff above the river. At weekends, families come here to cycle and walk; there are bicycle hire options near the main access points. The old port area has some remnant industrial architecture that adds to the slightly rough-edged character that defines much of Asuncion.
