Sport Fishing

Villa Florida is the centre of sport fishing in Paraguay. Several fishing lodges along the river — most a short drive out of town — cater to anglers from Asunción, Buenos Aires and further afield, offering boats, guides, equipment, meals and basic accommodation. The standard format is a half- or full-day boat trip from the lodge, working the deeper bends and underwater snags where dorado hold up.

Late August to mid-November is the prime season, when the dorado are most active and the river is at fishable levels. Catch-and-release has become the norm at most reputable lodges. December through March is hot and the river is usually too high. Permits are required and are most easily arranged through the lodge itself.

A story
The dorado — *Salminus brasiliensis* — is sometimes called the river jaguar for its golden flanks and aggressive strike. A trophy dorado on the Tebicuary will run 10–15 kg, and the river has been a quiet pilgrimage site for Argentine and Paraguayan anglers since the 1960s. Pacú, surubí and pirá pyta round out the catch.
