Tebicuary River

The Tebicuary River is the reason Villa Florida exists. It runs broad and slow past the town, crossed here by the bridge on Ruta 1, and is one of the most popular sport-fishing rivers in Paraguay. The season runs roughly August to November; outside those months the river is hot, low and quiet.

A long sandy beach forms along the western bank in the dry season — informal but well-used by locals on weekends, with kiosks selling cold tereré and grilled fish. In November the town stages a one-day Festival del Pacú celebrating the local catch. The bridge across the Tebicuary gives the standard postcard view of Villa Florida — the river, the beach, the line of palms behind.

A story
The Tebicuary is a slow, tannin-stained river that drains a vast wetland system south of Asunción before joining the Río Paraguay. Its name comes from Guaraní *teby kuaru*, roughly "place of small fish" — a misnomer, since the river is best known for hosting some of the largest freshwater fish in the country, including the spectacular golden dorado.
