Huaraz, the regional capital and primary base, is accessible by overnight bus from Lima (about 8 hours, multiple operators, departing in the evening and arriving at dawn). The bus journey is long but the overnight buses are comfortable and the road is in good condition. There is no commercial airport in Huaraz; the nearest with regular service is Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport.
For those with less time, day buses run between Lima and Huaraz but the journey in daylight means losing a night in Huaraz. Most trekkers take the overnight bus, acclimatise for two to three days in Huaraz, and then venture higher.
Chavín de Huántar is reached by bus from Huaraz (approximately 3 hours); buses depart from the market area. Organised day tours from Huaraz are available and convenient.
