Yanahuara Mirador

Sillar-arched mirador with the postcard view of Arequipa under El Misti

Address Plaza Yanahuara, Arequipa

A short walk or twenty-minute taxi across the Rio Chili lies the suburb of Yanahuara, with its plaza and the city's classic viewpoint. A row of arched sillar gateways frames the view east across the river to the colonial centre, with the cathedral, San Francisco, and the bell towers in the middle ground and the three volcanoes — El Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu — rising behind. Each arch is carved with a quote from a different Arequipeñan poet or historical figure.

The 1750 Church of San Juan Bautista, on the same plaza, has another finely carved sillar facade and a quiet interior worth a brief stop. Yanahuara is also a good neighbourhood for lunch — Sol de Mayo, half a block off the plaza, is one of the city's most respected places to try classic Arequipa dishes.
