Huaca Rajada (Sipán)

Moche pyramid complex where the Lord of Sipán was discovered — the actual excavation site

Huaca Rajada is the archaeological site where Walter Alva uncovered the Lord of Sipán in 1987. It is about 35 km southeast of Chiclayo near the village of Sipán — a straightforward journey by taxi or tour. The site consists of two large Moche adobe pyramid mounds from around the 3rd century AD, partially excavated and partially eroded by centuries of looting and weather.

Visiting adds real context to the museum in Lambayeque: you can stand at the actual shaft where the royal tombs were found and look at the strata that preserved them for 1,700 years. The site museum on-site is modest compared to the Royal Tombs Museum, but the location itself is evocative. A small team of archaeologists continues excavation work; if you are lucky, there may be active digging to observe. Come in the morning before tour groups arrive.
