The Cathedral of Saint Mary faces Chiclayo's Plaza de Armas and is the most prominent building in the city centre. Built in a neoclassical style and consecrated in 1869, it is not an architectural spectacle on the scale of Trujillo or Lima's colonial churches, but the interior is cool and calm — a good refuge from the midday heat. The plaza around it is the social heart of the city, animated in the evenings with families, food carts, and street vendors. The Palacio Municipal on the west side of the square is worth a glance for its colonnaded facade.
