Sangalle, more commonly called The Oasis, is the small palm-shaded river valley at the bottom of the Colca canyon — a startling green clearing 1,200 metres below the rim, where a stream flows year-round and three rustic lodges have set up to receive hikers. The descent from Cabanaconde takes about two and a half hours on a steep zig-zag trail with no shade and no water on the way. The climb back is famously hard: three to four hours straight up.
The three lodges — Eden, Oasis, and Paradiso — all offer near-identical setups: thatched bamboo huts, basic shared bathrooms, set meals, and small swimming pools fed by the stream. Paradiso is usually considered the best. Book in advance during peak months (June–August), or take pot luck if you're walking down on a weekday. Mules can carry your bag, and for the climb back up they can also carry you — arrange the day before with any of the lodge owners.
