The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world — Polish surveys have measured it at over 3,400 metres from rim to river, roughly twice the depth of the Grand Canyon. It is the main reason most travellers head northwest from Arequipa, a five-hour bus ride away. The canyon offers spectacular hiking, hot springs, and the chance to watch Andean condors soaring on the thermals at Cruz del Condor. The local Collagua and Cabana communities still wear some of the most distinctive traditional clothing in South America.
The two main bases for visitors are Chivay at the eastern end of the canyon and Cabanaconde at the western end, near the deepest section and the best hiking.
