La Calera Hot Springs

La Calera hot springs are the most accessible and enjoyable thermal baths near Chivay, about two kilometres from the town centre. The pools sit at the edge of the Colca Valley, with views of the terraced hillsides and the river below. There are several pools at different temperatures; the hotter ones are closest to the source.

Entry costs a few dollars for tourists. The pools are busiest when tour groups arrive in late afternoon; coming in the morning or around midday gives you a quieter experience. You can walk from Chivay along a path following the valley, or take a colectivo from the plaza for a sol or two. Bring a towel and sandals.

A story
The hot springs at La Calera emerge from the earth at around 85°C — hot enough to cook. The pools where visitors bathe are cooled to a comfortable 35–45°C by mixing with cold river water. Locals have bathed here for centuries; the Inca, who terraced and farmed the Colca Valley extensively, likely used these same springs.
