Uskallaqta Archaeological Site

Uskallaqta is an archaeological complex about four kilometres south of Chivay, containing stone tombs (chullpas) and the ruins of pre-Inca stone structures. The site sits on a hillside above the valley floor, with views across the Colca Canyon and the snow-capped Mismi volcano — one of the source mountains of the Amazon River.

The site is not heavily visited or commercialised, making it a good choice for travellers wanting to explore Andean archaeological heritage without crowds. Getting there requires either a half-day walk from Chivay or a taxi. There is no formal entrance infrastructure.

A story
The Colca Valley was densely settled by the Collagua and Cabana people long before the Inca arrived. When the Inca conquered the region in the 15th century, they resettled the population from the hillside villages into the valley floor towns that still exist today — leaving the older hilltop settlements empty. Uskallaqta is one of the best preserved of these abandoned villages.
