The Cerrito de la Libertad is a wooded hill at the northeast edge of central Huancayo, topped by a park with good views over the city and the Mantaro Valley. The climb is short — perhaps fifteen minutes on a path through trees — and the summit offers a 360-degree panorama that gives useful context for the valley's remarkable geography: a broad flat floor bounded by steep Andean ridges, with Huancayo sprawling across it.
The park at the top has benches, a small zoo, and a handful of rides that draw families at weekends. It is not dramatic, but the views are genuine and the walk is a welcome break from the market streets below. The zoo holds Andean animals including condors, spectacled bears, and alpacas — a good stop if you are travelling with children or are unlikely to encounter these animals in the wild. A statue of the Virgin looks out over the city from the summit.
