Moche Pyramids

Major Moche temple platforms near Trujillo, including Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna.

The Huacas del Sol y de la Luna are the great Moche temple platforms in the valley behind Trujillo, an easy excursion from Huanchaco and one of the strongest archaeological visits on Peru's north coast. Huaca del Sol is the larger pyramid, built from millions of adobe bricks; Huaca de la Luna is the showpiece, with painted reliefs, ritual patios, and fierce Ai Apaec faces still carrying traces of red, yellow, black, and white pigment.

The site works best with a guide, because the power of the place is in the sequence: ceremonial spaces, ramps, sacrifice areas, and layers of temples built over older temples. It is not as immediately famous as Chan Chan, but the colours and the excavated ritual architecture make it feel more intimate and easier to read.
