Mirador de Rataquenua

The Mirador de Rataquenua sits above the city at around 3,600 metres and offers the most accessible panoramic view of the Cordillera Blanca from Huaraz. The trail starts from the upper part of town and takes about one hour at a gentle pace — a good acclimatisation walk on your first or second day in the city.

From the mirador you can see Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Huandoy, and many other peaks arranged in a dramatic white wall to the east. Early morning is best — the mountains are clearest before midday clouds roll in. Continue past the mirador to reach Pukaventana, a natural rock formation above the treeline, for even wider views over the Santa Valley. The roundtrip from town takes three to four hours and requires no special equipment.

A story
On clear mornings before the valley clouds build, the view from Rataquenua takes in the entire span of the Cordillera Blanca from north to south — a 180-kilometre wall of glaciated peaks that includes more than two dozen summits above 6,000 metres.
