Ica Stones at the Cabrera Museum

The Museo Cabrera houses the famous — or infamous — Ica Stones, an enormous collection of carved andesite stones that the late Dr Javier Cabrera believed were prehistoric artefacts proving humans coexisted with dinosaurs. The carvings show all manner of unlikely scenes, from surgeons performing heart transplants to people riding triceratops.

Cabrera spent his life defending the stones' authenticity, and the museum is a kind of shrine to that cause, run by his daughter. Even sceptics — and there are many — find the collection compelling for the sheer scale of it and for the story behind it. The museum is small, idiosyncratic, and unlike anything else in Peru.

A story
Dr Javier Cabrera amassed a collection of more than 11,000 engraved stones that supposedly depict dinosaurs, heart surgery, and ancient astronomical instruments. He believed they proved an advanced prehistoric civilisation. They were almost certainly carved in the 1960s by a local farmer, but the museum remains a fascinating monument to one man's obsession.
