Base yourself in Chachapoyas for food and nightlife — it is about a 3 to 4 hour drive from Kuelap and serves as the main hub for this part of northern Peru. The town has a pleasant plaza, several good cafés serving regional coffee, and enough restaurants and bars to keep you occupied in the evenings. It is small and unhurried, but there is genuine life here, and the guesthouses around the main square are reasonably priced.
