The main draw at Kuelap is the citadel itself — a massive stone fortress built by the Chachapoyas culture, a pre-Inca civilisation known for their mountaintop cities, cliff tombs, and elaborate stonework. The site contains over 400 circular stone structures within walls that rise up to 20 metres high, all set in swirling cloud forest at over 3000 metres above sea level. Even partially restored, it conveys the scale and sophistication of a culture that flourished here for centuries before falling to the Inca in the late 15th century.
