El Faro Surf Point

El Faro — the lighthouse point at the northern end of the bay — is the focal point of surfing in Pacasmayo. The left-hand point break that runs from the lighthouse into the bay is one of Peru's better known surf spots, producing long rides on the right swell conditions. The consistent wind that makes the bay excellent for kite and windsurfing also adds a challenging side-shore element for surfers.

Boards can be rented from a handful of local operators near the seafront, and the surf community in Pacasmayo is friendly and knowledgeable about local conditions. The bay also has gentler sections suitable for kitesurfing and windsurfing lessons. Conditions are best in the Peruvian winter months (June to September) when the Humboldt Current is coldest and the offshore swells most consistent.

A story
The left-hand break at El Faro has been called one of the longest rideable waves in South America — on the right swell, a single wave can run for several hundred metres before closing out. This is not a beginner beach: the point break requires confident paddling, and the rocks near the lighthouse add consequence to a wipeout. But for experienced surfers, it is the reason to come to Pacasmayo.
