Brownsberg Nature Park

Rainforest plateau with waterfall trails, noisy monkeys, and broad views over the Brokopondo reservoir

Brownsberg is the easiest serious rainforest trip from Paramaribo. The park rises above the Brokopondo reservoir, and short trails leave the plateau for viewpoints and waterfalls. You are more likely to hear red howler monkeys before seeing them; birds and smaller primates reward an early start.

It can be done as a long day trip, but staying longer gives the forest time to quiet down after daytime visitors leave. Do not expect polished facilities. Check current accommodation, trail, water, and road conditions with STINASU before departure, and bring food, drinking water, insect repellent, and cash unless your operator says otherwise.

The view over the reservoir needs context. The Afobaka dam flooded a vast forest area in the 1960s and forced Saamaka communities from their villages; dead treetops still break the water in places. A good guide should explain that history as well as identify wildlife.

Activities

Brownsberg sits on a plateau above the Brokopondo reservoir, close enough to Paramaribo to be the country's standard day trip into rainforest — waterfalls, howler monkeys, and a view over the drowned forest of the lake. Most operators pair it with a boat trip out to one of the islands in the reservoir.

It can be done in a long day from the city, or as an overnight if you want the dawn.
