Museum Bakkie

Personal plantation museum using rare books, maps, prints, and objects to examine Commewijne's history

Museum Bakkie occupies the former Reynsdorp plantation and draws on a remarkably personal collection of early books, maps, prints, bottles, tools, and household objects. Its strongest material connects the written European record of Suriname with lives on the plantations and with the family history of co-founder Marsha Mormon.

This is a small private museum, not a place to arrive unannounced. Contact it ahead of time and arrange the river transport as well as the visit. A guided explanation is essential: without it, rare editions and ordinary-looking objects lose much of their meaning.
