Suriname-Rivier Lightship

Rusting 1910 lightship stranded in a wet dock inside Fort Nieuw Amsterdam

The engine-less Suriname-Rivier once marked the mouth of the Suriname River and housed pilots waiting to guide ships toward Paramaribo. Built in Haarlem in 1910, it made the Atlantic crossing under sail and entered service the following year.

After retirement it was manoeuvred into a wet dock at Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, where it has deteriorated badly. It is an evocative object rather than a restored museum ship: view it from the fort grounds and do not expect to board.
