Viña Edén sits on a ridge above Pueblo Edén, forty minutes inland from Punta del Este, and the setting does a lot of the work: vines dropping away down the hillside, the sierra beyond, and a tasting room built to look at it. The wines have won properly contested awards, which in Uruguay's young fine-wine scene still means something.
The visit is the full boutique-winery programme — guided tasting, vineyard walk, and a restaurant doing regional cooking matched to the bottles. It is the most polished of the Maldonado bodegas and priced accordingly.
Pueblo Edén itself, a hamlet of a few dozen people, is worth the detour on the way. Reserve by WhatsApp; the number matches their Ministry of Tourism registration.
