Punta del Este's two coastlines could not be more different. Playa Mansa — the bay side, facing west across the Río de la Plata — is calm and sheltered, with flat water ideal for families and anyone who just wants to swim. The water is cooler and greener than the ocean side. Playa Brava — the Atlantic side, facing east — has real waves, strong currents, and the kind of dramatic surf that makes it a magnet for the beautiful people who come here to be seen. La Mano sculpture is on Playa Brava.
Between December and March the beaches fill completely on weekends. Chairs and parasols are available for rent on both main beaches. For something quieter, walk north along either coast — the beaches continue for several kilometres and thin out quickly once you are beyond the main resort area.
