Altagracia Square

Officially the Plaza Pablo Acosta Ortiz but always called Altagracia by everyone in the neighbourhood, this small square in the eastern part of the centre is named for the Lara-born surgeon who modernised medicine in Venezuela in the late 19th century. It sits in the Altagracia barrio, one of the older parts of the city, and is fringed by low-rise houses and a couple of unpretentious bars.

There is not much to see in itself, but it makes a pleasant detour east of the cathedral and is a quick way to get a feel for Barquisimeto outside the immediate downtown grid.
