The historic centre is laid out on a regular north-south, east-west grid of carreras and calles, and walking is the most practical way to cover the cathedral, Plaza Bolívar, and the museum — everything is within twenty minutes on foot. The blocks are long and the sun is strong, so a hat and water help.
For longer hops — out to the Obelisco, the Flor de Venezuela, or the airport — taxis are cheap and easy to flag, but always agree the fare before getting in. Local buses (por puestos) run on fixed routes, useful if you understand the system but rarely worth the effort for short stays. The TransBarca trunk bus system runs along the main axis of the city but coverage and reliability have been uneven in recent years.
