Beaches

The beaches around Choroni and Puerto Colombia are among the most accessible and appealing on Venezuela's Caribbean coast. Playa Grande is the main beach, a broad arc of dark sand at Puerto Colombia with calm warm water. Smaller and quieter beaches are scattered in both directions along the coast, most accessible only by boat from Puerto Colombia.

Playa Valle Seco, a short boat ride east, is a popular alternative when Playa Grande is crowded. Further east, the coast toward Chuao and Cuyagua offers excellent snorkelling in clearer water. Cuyagua has consistent surf and is the preferred destination for anyone wanting waves rather than calm swimming. Boat trips along the coast depart from Puerto Colombia in the morning; the fishermen on the beach arrange them informally.

The sea is warm year-round, though the dry season (December to April) generally means calmer seas and better visibility for snorkelling. The rainy season (May to November) brings heavier surf and occasional rough conditions. The water temperature stays above 26°C throughout the year.
