Getting There

Choroni is about 100 kilometres from Caracas but the journey takes two to three hours because of the mountain road through Henri Pittier National Park. The road from Maracay — the staging point most Venezuelans use — climbs through cloud forest and descends via tight switchbacks to the coast. It is not difficult in good conditions, but in fog or rain it requires care.

From Caracas, the most practical route is to take the highway to Maracay (about 90 minutes), then take the road to Choroni through the national park (another 45-60 minutes). Bus services run from Caracas's La Bandera terminal to Maracay; from Maracay's bus terminal, shared taxis (por puestos) and occasional buses run to Choroni and Puerto Colombia. The Maracay to Choroni section takes about an hour in a car; in a por puesto it can take longer depending on stops.

There is no direct connection to Choroni from Caracas's main bus terminals without a change in Maracay. The road is the only overland access; there is no rail link. Some visitors rent a car in Caracas for the flexibility, which makes the drive through the park more enjoyable. The road is single-lane in places and steep; vehicles with good brakes are recommended.
