San Pedro is the island's main settlement and the place where the ferry from Punta de Piedras on Margarita docks. It is a small, colourful village strung along the waterfront — pastel-painted houses, a modest church, fishing boats hauled up on the sand, and stretches of fish drying on wooden racks in the sun.
It is unmistakably a working community rather than a tourist setting, and the visitors who do come here mostly drive straight on to the southern beaches. A wander through the market and along the dock in the early morning, when the night's catch comes in, is the most rewarding part of any visit.
