By Air
Venezuela's main international gateway is Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS) in Maiquetía, about 25km from central Caracas. The drive can take 30 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Several airlines have suspended service to Venezuela in recent years following government disputes, so flight options from Europe and North America are limited. As of 2025, Copa Airlines (Panama) operates the most reliable connections, with hubs in Panama City offering onward links to North America and Europe. Conviasa, the Venezuelan state carrier, flies to Havana and other regional destinations. From South America, connections via Bogotá or Lima are generally the most practical options.
Be aware that Maiquetía airport has a poor safety reputation. Use only officially licensed taxis (booked through the arrivals hall desks), never accept unsolicited ride offers, and avoid arriving or departing at night if possible.
La Chinita International Airport (MAR) in Maracaibo handles some regional flights.
By Road
Venezuela shares land borders with Colombia and Brazil. The main crossing from Colombia is at the Simón Bolívar International Bridge between Cúcuta and San Antonio del Táchira. The Paraguachón crossing in the north (Maracaibo region) is less commonly used by tourists. Road conditions on the Venezuelan side and crossing procedures can be unpredictable; check current conditions carefully before attempting an overland entry.
The Manaus–Caracas road route through Brazil exists but is extremely long and crosses remote, poorly maintained roads.
Visa
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Venezuela. Visas are not available on arrival, and attempting entry without the correct documentation can result in detention. Apply well in advance through a Venezuelan consulate. Upon arrival, ensure you receive an entry stamp — immigration records are not always reliable.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if entering from Brazil or transiting through Brazil for more than 12 hours.
Departure Tax
An airport departure tax is included in most ticket prices for international flights, but verify this when booking.
