Bonefishing

Los Roques is one of the world's premier destinations for bonefishing — the sport of stalking bonefish on shallow tropical flats with a fly rod. The vast network of clear, shallow flats between the cays holds large populations of bonefish in sizes rarely encountered elsewhere. Local guides who have fished these waters for years can read the water and position anglers for shots at fish that are often visible from a standing position.

Permit and tarpon are also present. The catch-and-release ethic is observed by all reputable operations, and the guides are generally conservation-minded. Guided days typically run from early morning, when fish are most active on the flats, returning in time for lunch. Non-fishing companions can snorkel or relax on the nearby beach while the guide works.

A story
The shallow flats between the cays of Los Roques are considered among the finest bonefishing grounds in the world. The bonefish — pez ratón in Spanish — is a highly prized sport fish that feeds in shallow tropical flats, and the combination of clear water, sandy bottoms, and minimal fishing pressure has produced populations of exceptional size and number. International fly-fishing enthusiasts have been making dedicated trips here since the 1990s.
